Sonia Garrett is an amazing storyteller. She came to our elementary school to do storytelling for students ranging from kindergarten to grade 7. The presentations were enjoyed both by students and teachers. Sonia picked appropriate stories for each age group. For the intermediate students, she retold Warhorse< by Michael Morpurgo. The students were mesmerised by her descriptions and plot development. One student commented on how she liked how Sonia sat on the edge of her seat and used lots of hand actions. Other students showed their appreciation by asking questions or making comments about the story or the storytelling experience. After the storytelling session, it was hard to keep the novel on our library shelves.
With the younger students, Sonia retold some of Aesop’s fables. Again, the students were actively engaged listeners. A student remarked that it was a great experience to be able to listen to a story without looking at pictures. He wondered how Sonia could remember everything she wanted to say. A teacher commented that she liked how the story connected with a unit she was teaching in the classroom.
Sonia provides a unique opportunity for children to experience oral storytelling. We look forward to having her back in the future.
